Wardrobe Glossary


Dresser – A wardrobe crew member who reports to the Wardrobe Supervisor. This crew member has a track on the production that happens at each performance. Depending on the theatre and the size of the crew, this person’s responsibilities may vary.


In-House – Within the theatre space where the show is being performed. Without having to send away or outsource.


Preset – The step in a Quick Change where a dresser might gather all of the pieces they need and prepare them for an upcoming costume change. During this step, the dresser will organize the pieces in a way that makes sense for the steps of the change, as well as the dresser and the actor’s position while the change is being performed.


Quick Change Booth (Syn. “QC Booth” or “Changing Booth”)– An area backstage, usually curtained for privacy, that is closer to the stage than the Dressing Rooms, where quick changes may happen. Typically has space for costume storage, to preset changes, as well as a mirror or a chair which may be used for active costume changes.


Quick Change (Syn. “QC”) – A change that happens during a live performance where an actor has little time to transfer from one outfit or “look” to a second outfit or “look”. Typically because of needs in the script or stage directions.


Quick Rigging (Syn. “Rigging”) – The act of altering a garment, especially the closures, in a way that makes the garment easier and/or more streamlined to get into and/or out of. Aids in quick changes.


SM – Stage Management/ Stage Manager


Stage Left (Syn. “SL”) – The side of the stage to your left if you were standing on stage looking out towards the audience.


Stage Right (Syn. “SR”) – The side of the stage to your right if you were standing onstage looking out towards the audience.


Top of Show (Syn. “TOS”) – The very beginning of the performance; 00:00 into the show.
